Operation Snow Shovel
What is Operation Snow Shovel?
Dundas Community Services initiated this intergenerational program in 1992. The service matches responsible students with seniors and/or persons with disabilities who require their walks, steps, and driveways cleared of snow and ice. The effectiveness of Operation Snow Shovel depends on a commitment and a full understanding of what is expected from both the student and employer.
Who benefits?
Both the resident and the student benefit from the program. The residents are provided with a reliable contact that will be available to clear away the snow when it comes, while the student gains an opportunity for employment. In addition, seniors, persons with disabilities and young people have an opportunity to meet and build relationships.
How does the program work?
Students apply at the office of Dundas Community Services (DCS), 2 King Street West, Suite 3A, Dundas. Residents also will complete an information sheet mailed out from Dundas Community Services identifying their needs throughout the winter season.
An interview with DCS staff will be arranged with the student. When possible, residents will be matched with a student from their neighborhood.
After the match has been made by DCS, a meeting between the student and resident is required. At that time, student and resident should establish what is expected from each. Arrangement regarding payments should also be discussed.
How much does it cost?
The cost depends on the size of the job and what is required to be done. It is advisable to determine the price before the season starts, a fixed price per time or a fixed price for the season. Keep in mind that Ontario’s minimum wage is $7.45 for persons 18 years of age or older and $6.95 for persons under 18 years of age.
What if there is a problem?
If you have a problem or question, call DCS at 905-627-5461. If the student does not show up, the employer should try calling the students home first.
Voluntary Program
The purpose of Operation Snow Shovel voluntary program is to match responsible student volunteers with persons who are unable to pay for snow removal for various reasons. These persons could be low-income residents; persons with activity limitations; persons with disabilities and seniors.
Dundas Community Services will supply a responsible student to remove snow from sidewalks, steps and driveways. In return the resident and student both benefit from the volunteer program. The resident is provided with a reliable student who will be available to clear away the snow. The student gains volunteer hours, which for some, can be applied to their required 40 hours of volunteer work for their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
